Key Definitions
What is an Agile Release Train (ART)?
An Agile Release Train (ART) is a long-lived team of Agile teams (typically 50-125 people) that plans, commits, and executes together. The ART operates on a fixed schedule called a Program Increment (PI), usually 8-12 weeks long. All teams on the ART align to a common mission and deliver value incrementally.
What is a SAFe Agile Team?
A SAFe Agile Team is a cross-functional group of 5-11 individuals who define, build, test, and deliver an increment of value in a short timebox. Each team has the skills needed to deliver end-to-end value and operates within an Agile Release Train, collaborating with other teams to achieve PI Objectives.
What is Program Increment (PI) Planning?
PI Planning is a cadence-based event that serves as the heartbeat of the Agile Release Train. Every 8-12 weeks all ART members gather to align on objectives, dependencies, and risks. Teams create iteration plans, establish features and stories, and commit to PI Objectives that support business goals.
What is an Iteration in SAFe?
An iteration is a fixed timebox (typically two weeks) in which an Agile team delivers a working increment of value. SAFe teams plan iterations during PI Planning, execute them with Scrum or Kanban practices, and demonstrate results at iteration review and system demos.
